In the following commentary, he explains the difference between traditional vaccines and DNA / RNA vaccines, which, once again, have never been approved for human use:
Teach your body how to defeat a pathogen without ever getting sick. The two most common types — and the ones you probably know best — are inactivated and live vaccines.
Inactivated vaccines contain pathogens that have been killed. Live vaccines, on the other hand, are made up of living pathogens that have been weakened (or “attenuated”).
They are very effective, but more prone to side effects than their inactivated counterparts.
Inactivated and live vaccines are what we consider “traditional” approaches. There are a number of COVID-19 vaccine candidates of both types, and for good reason: they are well established. We know how to test and make them.
The downside is that it takes time to make them. There is a ton of material in each dose of a vaccine. Most of this material is organic, which means you have to grow it. It takes time, unfortunately.
This is why I am particularly enthusiastic about two new approaches adopted by some of the candidates: RNA and DNA vaccines. If any of these new approaches prove effective, we will likely be able to distribute vaccines worldwide much more quickly (for the sake of simplicity, I will only explain RNA vaccines.
DNA vaccines are similar, but with a different type of genetic material and method of administration).
Our foundation — both through its own funding and through CEPI — has been supporting the development of an RNA vaccine platform for almost ten years.
We had planned to use it to make vaccines against diseases that affect the poor like malaria, but today it seems to be one of the most promising options for COVID. The first candidate to start human trials was an RNA vaccine created by a company called Moderna.
Here’s how an RNA vaccine works: rather than injecting the antigen of a pathogen into your body, you give it the genetic code necessary to produce that antigen itself.
When antigens appear outside your cells, your immune system attacks them and learns to defeat future intruders during the process. Basically, you transform your body into its own vaccine manufacturing unit.
Because RNA vaccines let your body do most of the work, they don’t need a lot of equipment. This makes them much faster to manufacture. But there is a catch: we do not yet know for sure whether RNA is a viable platform for vaccines.
Since COVID would be the first RNA vaccine to come out, we need to prove both that the platform itself works and that it creates immunity. It’s a bit like building your computer system and your first software at the same time. ” ~ Bill Gates
Thus, the Covid-19 vaccine will not be a traditional vaccine. It will not be tested significantly or standard gave the current state of emergency. It will be administered by the military, and everyone on the planet will have to take it.
